Optical Systems Engineer

Permanent - UK/Hybrid

The role will involve:

  • System design of ground-based and space-based optical systems

  • Assisting requirements gathering for opto-mechanical systems

  • Responsible for prototyping and testing of mechanical components

  • Liaising with manufacturers and suppliers

  • Feeding in to broader system design

 

Person specification

Essential

  • Degree in Mechanical engineering, Physics, Optics, or similar

  • Demonstrated experience with design, build and test of optical systems

  • Experience with rapid prototyping manufacturing techniques

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills

Desirable

  • PhD in Astronomy/Optics/Physics

  • Strong user of CAD software (e.g. SolidWorks)

  • Experience with various types of optical systems/components such as telescopes, cameras, lasers, LIDAR, lenses, mirrors is highly desirable

  • Experienced user of optical design software such as Zemax OpticStudio is desired but not essential

  • Experience working with institutional customers and academic partners

We are seeking a project manager with demonstrated initiative, enthusiasm, and drive who can inspire and lead a team to execute cutting-edge space projects to a variety of clients, including institutional, export, and defence clients. Opportunities to also work on grant application writing and business development.

The role will involve:

  • Management of projects from contract commencement through development and delivery of space and ground segments.

  • To be responsible for all aspects of the project, or a major element of a programme, working in accordance with the established procedures & processes developed within Lumi Space (including schedules, deliverables lists, management plans, risk management/mitigation, reviews, payment milestones etc).

  • Communication with Lumi Space customers and internal stakeholders.

  • Monitoring and control of the project finances to ensure the project is delivered within the agreed budget.

  • Supporting bids, covering deliverables, schedule, costs, risks and customer interactions.

 

Person Specification

Essential

  • Proven experience in project management specifically in setting up, running and successfully delivering projects, ideally in a satellite or aerospace engineering industry and for stakeholders such as UKSA, ESA, and Innovate UK.

  • Experience of interfacing with customers.

  • Quality assurance and risk management experience.

  • Good people management skills and team working skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, initiative and a high degree of organisation.

  • Proven ability to deliver solutions under pressure and to tight timescales.

  • Ability to produce and maintain a risk register.

  • Ability to create a project plan and to translate that into a project schedule within appropriate software tools.

  • Understanding of contracts and product assurance plans.

 

Desirable

  • Familiarity with Innovate UK, Space Agency and MoD (Ministry of Defence) processes

  • Good experience of implementing contracts.

  • Familiarity with ECSS standards and their implications for product delivery

  • Experience developing satellite / ground station systems

  • Experience developing electro-optical systems

  • Ability to work closely with technical teams to understand and grasp concepts and issues and translate those to schedule and cost impacts with a balanced approach to risk

  • Team expansion, hiring and company culture formation experience would be beneficial.
